Two live bullets and a death threat was mailed to DAP chairman Karpal Singh’s house in Jalan Utama here.
Karpal Singh said he was in Kuala Lumpur when an employee at his Penang office in Green Hall called at 9.45am on Thursday to inform him of the letter.
Another employee had earlier picked up his mail from the house
“I told her (the staff member) to keep the envelope and its contents in my office safe until I arrived in Penang to lodge a police report,” he told reporters here yesterday.
Karpal Singh showed reporters the bullets, the letter which was written in red ink and the envelope which was postmarked “Ipoh, Perak, Feb 12”.
The sender had used on the envelope a 50-sen commemorative stamp launched in conjunction with the Sultan of Perak’s recent silver jubilee.
The writer told Karpal Singh not to fool around with the Malay rulers and Malays in general and also threatened to burn his entire family, adding that he knew where Karpal Singh lived.
Karpal Singh, who is Bukit Gelugor MP, said the previous occasion he received bullets in the mail was in May last year. That letter was sent to his office in Jalan Pudu Ulu in Kuala Lumpur.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who visited Karpal Singh at his house, urged police to provide protection to him, his family and his properties, including both his offices in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
Lim also condemned Umno Youth for holding demonstrations over the Perak issue and for hitting out at Karpal Singh over alleged treachery against the Perak Sultan.
Police media relations officer Supt Shaharon Anuar Abdul Latif, in a statement of behalf of the state police chief, confirmed that police had received Karpal Singh’s report.
The case has been classified as criminal intimidation by anonymous communications

Dr. M's Says
Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad believes that the circulation of Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong’s semi-nude photographs was politically motivated.
“In Malaysia now, we’re seeing a lot of dirty politics,” the former Prime Minister said in response to claims that she was a victim of a political smear campaign.
He added that a lot of things were happening in Malaysia which was related to politics.
“This is bad because it’s so easy to take pictures and get people into trouble,” he told The Star after giving a talk on “Malaysia At The Crossroads” at Cambridge University on Wednesday.
Dr Mahathir added that whether Wong would eventually resign depended on her party although she had offered to do so.

BN must respect country’s democracy
Barisan Nasional must respect the country’s democratic system and both the federal and state constitutions, said Perak’s former senior state executive council member Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham.
He said the State Assembly Speaker who leads the Rights and Privileges Committee had based his decisions on the federal and state constitutions and the laws governing them.
“The committee’s decisions must be respected. It has played its role as prescribed by the law in our democratic system,” Ngeh said referring to the decision to bar and suspend Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and his six executive council members from the state assembly.
The Perak DAP chief was hitting out at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and others who he claimed were trying to use the Sultan of Perak to further their political agenda.
He asked that the Sultan not be dragged into the arena of politics, which is divisive in times of crisis.
“His Royal Highness must remain the symbol of unity and rise above politics,” he said.

New Crap from Dr. Khir
Selangor Opposition chief Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo believes that there is a power struggle among PKR politicians to wrest power from the Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.
Dr Khir believes that the scandalous photos of Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong being exposed to the public marked the start of a bigger political plot in PKR to topple Khalid.
“I believe that there is a power struggle among PKR politicians to wrest power from the Mentri Besar.
Elizabeth’s issue that was unfolding could be a designed plan to remove Khalid from office and replace him with another person from the PKR state’s coalition, he told a press conference.
Dr Khir stressed that the plans to topple Khalid from office had no links with Umno or Barisan Nasional.
“We are not behind this devious plan. So, I feel, Pakatan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, should retract his statements made to the media that Elizabeth’s issue was engineered by Umno.
“Such allegations saddened fellow Umno members and me, as we do not stoop that low,” he said.
He added that from newspaper reports, the special friend of Wong is a PKR member and there is no connection with Umno or Barisan Nasional.
“Our hearts go out to her. We understand her predicament. Her resignation is a good step forward as not all Malaysian could accept the issue.
“Now, it is better for PKR to accept her resignation, as it will stop all the harassment she is facing. We all hope the harassment will stop and all parties involved will give her space,” he said.

Prove the legality of suspension order
Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Zambry Abd Kadir has challenged State Assembly Speaker V. Sivakumar to prove that his suspension order is legal.
“He (Sivakumar) should check whether it had been right for him to do that,” Dr Zambry told reporters after attending a programme with fishermen, livestock breeders and farmers yesterday.
The Mentri Besar accused Sivakumar, who heads the state’s Rights and Privileges Committee, of misusing his powers and acting beyond his jurisdiction.
On Sivakumar’s statement that he had failed to give any explanation to the inquiry by the committee, Dr Zambry replied: “That is a total lie.”
Asked if he would lodge a police report as advised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Dr Zambry replied they would definitely act according to the rule of law, not according to whims and fancies.
On Sivakumar saying Dr Zambry and his exco members would be removed if they attended the next assembly sitting, the Mentri Besar again reiterated they would act according to the rule of law.
To another question whether he would move a motion during the assembly sitting, he said: “Do not anticipate anything right now.
“My main concern now is to work for the people as the Mentri Besar.”
Earlier, Dr Zambry told reporters at the state secretariat in Ipoh that the latest twist was all a game by Pakatan Rakyat, adding the necessary action would be taken against Sivakumar.
He stressed he had attended the two-day inquiry out of respect to the Speaker, and urged the people not to worry as the Government remained stable and intact.
Meanwhile, attempts to contact state legal adviser Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid were futile.

Parliament Speaker says....
The Perak State Assembly Speaker was daring to suspend the Mentri Besar and the six exco members, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia said yesterday.
“If I were him, I would not have dared to do it.” That was Pandikar’s brief comment on the situation in Perak.
Pandikar Amin, who was mobbed for his comments the moment he stepped out from Dewan Rakyat said that as the Perak Speaker, V. Sivaku—mar should know what he was doing when he decided to suspend the seven.
Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the decision by the Committee of Special Privileges to suspend Datuk Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and other exco members was not valid.
“When Pakatan Rakyat was state government, it did not reflect this composition because there was only one Barisan MP present. And when the new Mentri Besar was appointed, he should have re-convened a new committee to reflect this composition,” he said.
Dr Wan Junaidi, a lawyer by profession, also said that any decision by the committee should be reported in writing to the assembly without first divulging it to the media.
“It is only when the assembly has approved the report that the decision becomes final.”
Asked who could declare the decision by the committee to be “invalid”, Dr Wan Junaidi said the matter could be brought to court.
“However, if the court says it has no jurisdiction, then it should go back to the House,” he said.
In George Town, Penang State Assembly Speaker Abdul Halim Hussain said Sivakumar’s decision should be respected by everyone.
He said the Speaker had the discretion to act under the state’s Standing Order and the state constitution.
In Alor Setar, Kedah State Assembly Speaker Datuk Dr Abdul Isa Ismail defended the move by his Perak counterpart, saying the Speaker had the right to suspend anyone showing contempt to the House.
“A Speaker has the highest power within the context of the House. He can take action deemed fit to protect the House,” he said.

Anwar promises proof of BN blackmail
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he will expose how threats and inducements are used against Pakatan Rakyat state assemblymen and members of parliament in his speech in parliament tomorrow.
“I am going to show proof of blackmail in my parliament speech tomorrow,” the federal representative for Permatang Pauh told reporters today.
Pakatan Rakyat leaders have been under ferocious pressure with talk of defections rife ever since three Perak state representatives switched their support from the fledging coalition earlier this month giving BN a lead in the state assembly and causing the ouster of Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaludin.
It is speculated that the proof that Anwar plans to present tomorrow will be related to the resignation of PKR’s Bukit Selambau state assemblyman V Arumugam on February 8. The resignation was allegedly due to pressure exerted by BN on Arumugam to defect.
Arumugam had lodged a police report on various threats he received but claims no police action was taken.
Apart from Kedah, BN is also rumoured to be on the prowl in Selangor where a PKR led Pakatan government holds an eight seat advantage over BN.
Last week, PKR’s Port Klang assemblyman Badrul Hashim Abdullah had to deny allegations that khalwat charges are being used against him in order to force a defection to BN.
Most recently, naked photographs of PKR’s Bukit Lanjan state representative Elizabeth Wong have been leaked to the media and Pakatan Rakyat has been quick to label the photos as BN’s attempt at gutter politics aimed at discrediting the Selangor state government with which Wong was a state executive councillor.
In a possibly related incident, a man named Ramlan Haji Abu Bakar who claims to be president of Gerakan Reformasi Rakyat Malaysia (Reformis) met with reporters in Parliament today and told them that he was issuing PKR vice president Azmin Ali with an ultimatum to meet him within five days or he would expose what he claims would be damaging secrets of the Selangor government.
In response, Azmin told reporters that he had been away performing his umrah in Mecca and then preoccupied with the political crisis in Perak which was the reason why he was not able to get in touch with the president of Reformis.
Azmin also told reporters that he installed a CCTV system in his house two days ago due to security concerns as his house was broken into four times within a year and both brake hoses in his car were recently cut. “When my house was broken into, it was not an ordinary burglary,” he says. “They wanted to put something into the house.”
On a separate topic, Azmin said that PKR would continue to defend embattled state representative Wong, and that all PKR members of parliament and state representatives would be meeting tonight to discuss the issue.
