The police are expected to record a statement from Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng following reports in the Chinese press on an alleged plot to assassinate him.
OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said they would record statements from reporters and other parties involved.
He was commenting on the police report lodged by Tanjung Gerakan Youth on Monday over Lim’s safety.
The Gerakan Youth head, H’ng Khoon Leng, saidreports in the Chinese press had serious implications on the state’s political, social and economic stability.
Four Chinese dailies – Kwong Wah Yit Poh, Guang Ming Daily, China Press and Oriental Daily – reported earlier that rumours were spreading like wildfire that “someone is out to finish Lim off”.
It is learnt that police have started calling up reporters from the Chinese press to record their statements.
ACP Azam said the police were surprised by the reports because they had yet to receive proof of any alleged assassination plan.
“We are investigating the case under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation,” he said.
When contacted, Lim’s political secretary Ng Wei Aik said his boss would cooperate with the police.
In Parliament, yesterday, Lim said he had not received any direct threat.
